What’s this blog all about?

I created Deplastic Life from a simple idea: to empower people to live healthier, more sustainable lives by reducing plastic use and exposure to microplastics.

Reducing plastic in our daily lives doesn’t have to be complicated. By making small, intentional choices, we can make a difference. Whether it’s cutting out single-use plastics, wearing natural fabrics, or throwing away all our plastic kitchenware, we have the power to make a positive change.

My Story

Hello, I’m Andrew Brand.

Being raised by a dad who knew more facts than the encyclopedia (and never stopped learning!) a sense of curiosity was instilled in me from a young age.

Studying journalism in college, and working at multiple news organizations, I learned how to find legit sources, do the research, and ask questions. A perfect compliment to my already curious mind.

Years ago I learned about the dangers in the chemicals found in plastics and have been diligent to cut them out of my life.

After discovering the concerning new findings about microplastics more recently, I decided it’s time to sound the alarm. It may be too big of a problem to solve, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be mitigated.

I’ve always been wary of microwaving plastic, but for the longest time the research didn’t support my suspicion that our plastic obsession has negative implications. Today, after numerous studies, the results are in: plastic is harmful. I knew it!

Now I’m taking all my expertise in journalism and storytelling and using it to find and share practical solutions to minimizing plastic use and microplastic exposure.

I love the outdoors. I spend as much time as possible out in nature!

Seeing plastic litter while hiking is inevitable. Even in some of the most remote places. It’s an unfortunate reality that reflects the greater problem of plastic pollution.

I want to continue to enjoy the wonderful outdoors, so I will keep picking up litter and minimizing my impact. But the things we do far from the trail also have an impact on the environment.

The other side of the plastic problem is environmental. And even if it’s just on our local hiking trail, each of us can help contribute to an ever-so-slightly more plastic-free experience in nature.

I’m determined to De-plastic my life. Will you join me?
